They say patience is a virtue, and I'd been very patient during our week's stay in County Clare in the west of Ireland.
Every evening I'd been hoping for clear skies at sunset so I could photograph the glorious scenery in the best light, but to no avail until this one evening when the rain stopped, the clouds rolled away and the golden rays of the setting sun streamed across the landscape.
It's at times like these that you need to know where to go, and I'd already spotted the potential of this location on the shores of Lough Derg during earlier visits when the weather wasn't so accomodating. There's something about lakes and jetties that's just so attractive, perhaps it's because the jetty leads your eye into the image, but I think there's also a subliminal 'wish you were here' message coming across. You could just imagine yourself walking out onto the jetty and enjoying the peace of the evening all around you. I could anyway!.
The timing for taking this photo was tight, as I wanted the hills behind the Lough to be sunlit, but the foreground to be in shadow. This gives a wonderful contrast in colour temperature between the warm tones of the sunlit hills and the decidedly cool blue tones of the areas in shadow.
A beautiful evening in a fantastic location. What more could you ask for?
