The story behind this image

One of the most astonishing places that Liz and I visited on our cruise around Iceland was the active volcanic area of Hverarond.

With sulpherous fumeroles, boiling mud, and steam coming out of the ground we could have been on another planet.

In fact, the place is so other-worldly that astronauts get sent here for training!

This image shows a geothermal mud eruption that we were able to get quite close to, but what the image doesn't convey is the heat, the bad eggs smell and the sounds of glooping mud that make this place such a sensory experience.

As well as still images, I also shot a short video of the boiling mud, which you can watch by following the link.
