The tortured landscape of Iceland is no more starkly in evidence that at Dimmuborgir, in the north of the island.
It's here that you can see the effects of the titanic forces in play as the north american and eurasian tectonic plates seperate, ripping apart the fabric of the earth.
The part of the landscape pictured here is now relatively stable, but towering columns of volcanic lava give the lie to this area's violent past.
