Grand Canyon #1

The Grand Canyon, Arizona

The story behind this image

The Grand Canyon - holidaying in Arizona my wife Liz and I couldn't really miss visiting it just to say we've been there, but what a spectacular place!

We made a day trip of it, driving up from Sedona, through Flagstaff and onto the Grand Canyon by the scenic route, rather than the interstate, arriving at the Canyon late morning.

Our plan was to visit the tourist overlooks during the day and return to the main village and ranger station to view the sunset from Yavapai Point before returning back to Sedona.

This photo shows the first view of the canyon that we had, after walking from the car park to Mather Point.

Taken in the harsh light of midday, shadows, depth perception and colour saturation are all reduced, and a fair bit of work in Photoshop was required to bring some visual impact to this image.

Photos taken later in the day, with angled light, gave a much better impression of size and form in the Canyon.

By the way, that tiny little green squiggly thing at the bottom of the photo is the mighty Colorado river!
