Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands is a small island of two distinct halves.
To the east lie the heavily developed tourist resorts and beaches, but if you want dramatic scenery and unspoilt natural beauty then it's to the west coast you want to go.
Mostly inacessible, there's only one very twisty road that runs up part of this coast, and when you drive it you'll see why.
Gran Canaria is essentially a big volcano, and while the east coast is relatively flat, the west coast is extremely mountainous, right up to the the Atlantic ocean.
My wife Liz and I, not being the types to enjoy lying on a beach, naturally gravitated to the west, driving the winding mountain roads up through the island's interior and on out to the coast.
This image shows the sort of views we enjoyed on our explore.
With parking opportunities few and far between on the majestic, but narrow, GC-200 road that runs along the coast, we stopped at every possible place that it was safe to do so to admire the views.
This image is my favourite from that drive, looking back along four beautifully sculpted triangular peaks that plunge into the Atlantic Ocean as they recede into the distance.
