Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands has some of the most interesting and varied volcanic landscapes that my wife Liz and I have come across in our travels.
So much so that certain rock formations have become tourist attractions in their own right.
One such is the volcanic plug called 'Roque Nublo', which Liz and I climbed part of the way up during our week long stay on the island in February 2019.
Situated near the centre of the island, at quite a high altitude, Roque Nublo is flanked by a forest of cloud pine trees which draw their life giving moisture from vapour as clouds blow over the mountains.
Those trees, with their verdant green needles, provided a great contrast to the barren red of the volcanic roack and the deep blue of the high altitude sky, so I made the most of them in this composition.
