The story behind this image

It was early February 2016 when my wife Liz and I spent a week on the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands.

On arriving we were suprised at how dried out and brown the landscape seemed, having expected more greenery following the usual winter rains.

On asking around we found out that this year there had been no winter, and no rain!

During our drives around the interior of the island this fact was certainly born out, with barren dessicated hillsides everywhere we went.

One of our exploratory drives took us along the very bendy GC-210 road, passing by the Presa del Parralillo reservoir, and we were shocked to see just how low the water level was.

Mind you, the whiteish rock exposed by the low water level made for a great photographic composition, acting as a highlight around the dark water, seperating the image into distinct tonal regions.

I just hope it rains soon, or there'll be a real problem with water on Gran Canaria.
