The Pitti Palace on the south bank of the river Arno is one of the foremost and well known art galleries in Florence, and Liz and I spent a day there exploring during our short break in Tuscany.
Although the artwork was nice, I was much more interested in the buildings and gardens, with the older, sub-terranean sections of the palace holding special interest.
This composition caught my eye due to the various juxtapositions of contrasts. There are geometrical contrasts, with straight lines set next to arches. There are colour contrasts between warm ochre walls and grey brick. There are tonal contrasts between areas in direct light and shadow and finally there are differences in texture between smooth and rough walls.
Quite a lot going on here then!
