Graffiti, Florence #1

Graffiti on a decaying wall in Florence, Italy

The story behind this image

When Liz and I visit a city, we like to wander around the non-tourist areas to see what normal life is like for the citizens.

Usually on such excursions we come across highly photogenic and colourful graffiti, but not so in Florence, Italy, where the back streets seem remarkably free of street art, as graffiti has become known as.

In the end I photographed this single, stark protest message. Not so much because the graffiti was photogenic in itself, but its placement on the decaying wall completed a nicely composed set of elements that make this image work as a whole.

Cover over any of the individual elements and the image falls aparts.
