The story behind this image

The single most impressive structure in Florence is the huge cathedral known as the Duomo.

However, for photographers who want to take more than just a snapshot it's a very frustrating structure.

Surrounded by a small square and narrow streets it's not possible to step far enough away from it to fit the entire structure in, even with a really wide angled lens.

Add to that the need to point the camera upwards to fit the height of the dome into a composition, and the ever present crowd of tourists milling around all sides of the building, meant for me that I just couldn't do photographic justice to the building as a whole.

When faced with a situation like that, normally I'll try and focus on photographing details rather than a whole structure, which proved to be the best thing to do here at the Duomo.

The red tiled dome and surrounding wall proved to be a simple yet pleasing subject, free of tourists and conveying a real sense of place and history.

In the end I decided to convert the image to monochrome to add to the air of age and history that the building evoked in me.
