High above the old town of Dubrovnik on top of Srdj Hill, thankfully accessible by cable car, lies the Fort Imperial, built by Napoleon in 1808.
The fort now houses a museum to the recent Balkan war, but poigniantly enough the fort itself bears the scars of the conflict.
This photo shows just one of the many shell and bullet holes that pockmark the walls, with the dressed stone facade blasted away to reveal the solid infill behind.
It's fitting somehow that this fort has been left damaged, as a stark reminder of the horrors that have beset this otherwise beautiful and historic city.
