In any town that relies on tourism as one of its main sources of income you'll find two distinct areas.
The first and most obvious is the tourist area, where the posher shops, street vendors and restaurants are lined up in a row with the sole purpose of divesting you of as much money as possible.
I'm all for boosting economies through tourism, especially in places such as Dubrovnik, Croatia which is recovering from a recent war. But there's a danger that these historic places will lose their unique character under the relentless bombardment of commercialism.
That's why, with only a few hours available to explore, Liz and I will take to the back streets in search of the areas that haven't been commercialsed too much.
Fortunately for us there's a large area of Old Dubrovnik that's pretty much original, and we spent an hour or so just wandering around looking in shops and seeing how the local folks lived (pretty relaxed from the look of it - must be the heat).
This shop front was typical of what we saw. Slightly shabby but full of local character and much nicer to photograph than the shiny monoliths on the tourist circuit.
