Dubrovnik bridge and boat #1

Photo of a pilot boat with the Franjo Tuđman suspension bridge in the background, Dubrovnik, Croatia

The story behind this image

One of the aspects of going on a cruise that I really look forward to is sailing into a beautiful port at sunrise. Not only do you get to see the landscape at the best time of day, but you also get a unique viewpoint from the high decks of a large cruise liner that you can't get any other way.

Hence sunrise found me, camera in hand along with a few other die hard photographers, high up on deck 10 of the P&O liner Arcadia as she (it?) sailed into port at the historical town of Dubrovnik on the Croatian coast.

The view as we sailed in was stunning, with the recently finished Franjo Tuđman suspension bridge in the background, framed against the inland mountains.

As with most ports we sailed into, we were met by a pilot boat which dropped off a pilot to guide us the last bit of the way into dock. This manoeuvre involved a tricky three point turn and reverse parallel park so I can see why some local knowledge was necessary.

Anyhow, the pilot boat made a great focal point for this image, sailing out of the sun along a streak of lighted ripples as it drew alongside.
