Laid out below me in all its wild glory and dappled with sunlight and shadow, this is a panoramic view out over Dartmoor from the high ground at Hemsworthy Gate on the eastern side of the National Park.
My wife Liz and I has set aside a day during our two week stay spent exploring Devon and Cornwall to tour around Dartmoor, driving from west to east across the park.
With rapidly changing weather we managed some brief hikes, never straying too far from the car as heavy showers and bursts of sunlight tracked across the landscape.
But Hemsworthy Gate, with its desolate topography of high moors and granite tors, proved irresistable so we indulged in a more serious walk up to the high point, getting back to the car just as the next band of rain hit us.
Still, that's Dartmoor for you, and from a photographic point of view I'd much rather have stimulating weather than boring blue skies!
