During our two week stay on the Mediterranean island of Crete, one of the nicest places that my wife Liz and I visited was the small seaside village of Mochlos on the northeast coast.
Mochlos was typical of a Cretan seaside village, with bars and tavernas along the seafront and residential dwellings one or two streets back inland.
After we'd wandered around the little harbour and photographed all the normal views we headed back to the residential part of town to see how things looked there.
We were pleasantly surprised to find quaint old houses with peeling paint and lovely flowering trees, such as this touching little tableau of blue wooden shutters almost covered over with a luxuriant array of pink flowers.
This view certainly conveys the feeling of relaxed living that we fell into during our all too short holiday.
