The island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea is well know for many things, mostly tourism, but back in time one of the features Crete was well know for was its windmills.
Numbering in the thousands, these windmills were once used to pump water from underground aquifers for irrigation, but have now almost all fallen into disuse and been allowed to crumble.
However, there are a few still preserved as attractions, and one such cluster is to be found overlooking the Lasithi Plateau in central Crete which is wherem Liz and I stopped for an exploratory hike and a few photographs.
This particular windmill was the best preserved of the bunch, complete with furled sails still.
