While poring over maps planning our two week holiday explore of the Mediterranean island of Crete my wife Liz and I thought we would be able to drive over the entire island from our base on the north eastern coast at Hersonissos.
However, we didn't quite realise just how big Crete was and in the end we had to restrict ourselves to exploring just the eastern half of the island.
We actually made it as far east as it's possible to go, ending up at the rather surreal seaside resort of Vai, with its rocky cliffs, suprisingly sandy beach and acres of protected palm trees.
After a cooling swim in the Med, and with Liz relaxing on the sand, I took myself and my camera up the rocky path to the clifftop overlooking the beach and coast to take this image, using the rocky cliffs as a vivid foreground set against the azure waters of the Mediterranean beyond.
There was a very different feel to this part of Crete than the central belt, with more of a North African vibe going on.
Maybe it was all those wild palm trees and run down banana plantations that did it.
