The weather during the two week stay that my wife Liz and I enjoyed on the Mediterranean island of Crete was unseasonably hot for September.
So we spent most of our time driving round the wild and rugged interior and coast, staying away from the developed touristic areas as much as possible, in the air-conditioned splendour of our battered old Hyundai Accent hire car - the ideal vehicle for driving in Crete!
The scenery was magnificent, but very dry and hot with temperatures nudging over 30°C, so we took it very easy with frequent stops to photograph the ever changing landscape.
One thing I was on the lookout for was a solitary tree, surviving in an otherwise dry and barren environment, such as this example near Malia on the north coast.
Images like this have a meaning beyond the obvious, and can be a metaphor for survival, overcoming adversity, and so on, so I always seek out such where I can, whether it be in the dry heat of Crete, or the soaking, windswept barren rocks of Snowdonia.
These trees are survivors, and as such get my respect, and a photograph!
