One of the main pleasures my wife Liz and I enjoyed during our two week explore of the Mediterranean island of Crete was driving our battered Hyundai rental car around the small coastal roads that abound in the north east region.
These roads, being relatively high up on the sides of mountains, gave us great views out over the sea, which glowed in the sunlight as though lit from beneath.
One of the most spectacular views we found was from the hills behind the fishing village of Plaka, overlooking the heavily fortified island of Spinalonga, set like a jewel in the shallow azure waters.
A convenient verge allowed me to stop the car and capture several overlapping frames of Spinalonga to make this high resloution panoramic collage of the island and its fortifications, with the ochre of the stonework contrasting beautifully with the surrounding turquoise Mediterranean.
