Having read the emotive book 'The Island', one of the must see places on my wife Liz's itinery for our two week holiday on Crete was the island of Spinalonga, set like a jewel in the Mediterranean Sea, just off Crete's northeastern coast.
Spinalonga has a long and chequered history, including being ruled by the Venetians who fortified the island in a most thorough and imposing manner.
So I was quite keen to visit as well, but more from a photographic that historical viewpoint, as old, decaying stonework really gets my creative juices flowing.
Well Liz wasn't disappointed in seeing places mentioned in the book she'd read, and I certainly wasn't disappointed in the photographic potential the island of Spinalonga had to offer.
So we spent a happy couple of hours wandering around the island in the heat before heading back to the small harbour to await the little ferry boat that plies to and fro between Spinalonga and the fishing village of Plaka back on Crete itself.
I photographed the still images to make this panoramic collage whaile waiting for the ferry, taking in one of the impressive Venetian strongholds and the azure waters of the Mediterranean, in which I was dipping my feet to cool off.
All in all, quite an experience.
