As well as being a place of outstanding natural beauty, the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea is also fascinating from a historical perspective.
And the great thing is that you can enjoy both beauty and history together in the same locations.
One such spot is Spinalonga, an island just off the northeastern coast of Crete in Mirabello Bay.
Set like a jewel in the azure waters of the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Spinalonga has layer upon layer of history attached, and even has a book () written featuring this region.
This panoramic collage places the island in its context, nestled close to the rugged northeastern coastline just offshore from the fishing village of Plaka.
