A hot dry summer and autumn in 2017 on the Mediterranean island of Crete saw the water level in the recently created Aposelemi reservoir at a seriously low level.
During our two week stay on the island in September 2017 my wife Liz and I drove past the reservoir on a number of occasions en route to the Lasithi Plateau, and we were intrigued by the apparently abandoned buildings by the water's edge on the far side of the reservoir.
A little bit of googling revealed that these building were, in fact, the abandoned village of Sfendili, normally under water but now revealed due to the low level of the reservoir.
A convenient layby proved irrestable under the circumstances, as I'd never seen or photographed such a place before.
so we pulled over and a short walk brought me to this spot, where the buildings of Sfendili were nicely framed by olive trees with the green waters of the reservoir beneath.
I wonder if it's rained yet, and if Sfendili has disappeared beneath the waters once again?
