Before visiting a new location, my wife Liz and I always buy a detailed map, showing the smaller roads and tiny villages that get missed off the tourist maps available at airports and the like.
Such was the case before we set off for two weeks on the Mediterranean island of Crete, and we were soon poring over potential driving routes and places to visit.
The north east coast looked pretty good, with rugged mountains crisscrossed by tiny roads leading down to interesting looking seaside villages.
One such spot that aroused our interest was Mochlos, near to a huge white sandstone quarry and with a small island just offshore.
The drive from our resort at Hersonissos across to the north east coast was a delight, taking in some lovely mountain scenery on the way, and Mochlos itself proved to be a lovely place, with azure seas stretching between the small harbour and that island I mentioned, which had some visible Minoan ruins to see as a bonus.
In fact, we liked Mochlos so much that we visited twice during our fortnight on Crete, and I took the shots to make this panoramic collage of the harbour, with its waterfront restaurants, together with the island and that azure sea, to give a complete picture of this charming spot.
