The north coast of Crete is the most heavily developed and touristic part of the island, but head east from the main drags of Hersonissos and Malia and things get a lot more natural and unspoilt.
My wife Liz and I took a couple of drives along the road that runs along the northeast coast, right by the Mediterranean Sea, stopping at various spots to enjoy the scenery and walk along the pebble beaches.
An especially lovely spot was the pebble and rock beach by the little village (just a couple of houses really) of Kato Selles.
We had the beach to ourselves, but someone had been there earlier and left their mark in the form of a pillar of balanced pebbles.
Quite a feature of the beaches on Crete we found as we explored the island.
