Move inland from the heavily developed tourist coastline on the north of Crete and you step back in time to a much more rural and authentic vibe on this beautiful island, suspended like a jewel in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
I captured this panoramic collage of central Crete while overlooking the village of Kalamafka, intrigued by the way the white buildings were nestled in a hollow in the folded landscape.
Another intriging feature that drew my eye to this scene was the white painted Greek Orthodox monument, perched high on a rocky outcrop overlooking Kalamafka.
These mountaintop churches and monuments were a feature throughout the more rural regions of Crete, and along with the seeming millions of olive trees were an abiding memory of the happy two weeks my wife Liz and I spent exploring the island in late summer 2017.
