When my wife Liz and I visit a new location we very quickly abandon the usual tourist hotspots and instead we mooch around the backstreets of towns and villages, checking out how ordinary life is lived.
Such was the case during our two week stay on the Mediterranean island of Crete, where we stopped for a looksee at the lovely seaside village of Mochlos on the eastern side of the island.
One thing that struck us during our stay on Crete was the overwhelming use of blue and white paint, the colours of Greece's national flag.
Everywhere we looked there were blue doors and windows, set in whitewashed walls, with the age and condition of the paint getting more rustic the further away from the centre of town we wandered.
This lovely old door, with its obligatory peeling blue paint, is a prime example which I couldn't pass by without taking a photo, with lovely faded colours and weathered features to be seen in all their glory, handily shaded from the harsh noonday sun.
