During our two week stay on the Mediterranean island of Crete my wife Liz and I made a point of getting out and about as much as possible, to see and experience more of the authentic greek culture than one would experience in touristic locations.
Our travels covered most of the eastern half of the island, taking in coasts, mountains and villages.
One aspect of greek culture that most impacted us was the abundance of small, family based greek orthodox churches, often beautifully designed, located and maintained.
One of the prettiest churches we stopped at was that of Agai (Saint) Paraskevi, right on the south coast next to the sea in the Viannos region.
Having spent a while admiring the decorated outside of the building, we were suprised to find the doors unlocked so we ventured inside to find stunning paintings adorning the walls and alter screen.
This image is of the painted panels and carvings on said alter screen, and gives but a pale representation of the reality.
