Most of the two weeks that Liz and I spent on the Mediterranean island of Crete in September 2017 was spent driving around the eastern half of Crete, taking in the beautiful scenery and basking in the hot weather.
On more than one occasion our travels took us around the lovely Mirabello Bay, where we spotted the rather dramatically located greek orthodox church of Agia Fotini, sitting right next to the sea and backed by the cliffs that lie between the towns of Agia Nikolaos and Sitia.
After we'd spent a while walking around the church, photographing the bulding from every worthwhile angle, I started to look for details that would make an image that conveyed some of the history and culture we were wrapped up in.
The old bell, with its patina of green corroded copper, looked great, so I framed up this shot, taking in the stark colours of the red roof, white walls and blue sky, with the bell as the focal point of the composition.
This is how I work most of the time, take the obvious photos first and then spend some time looking for details that convey meaning.
