During our two week explore of the Mediterranean island of Crete my wife Liz and I noticed three things in abundance, the first was olive trees, the second was windmills (both broken and working) and the third, and most striking, was the large number of small Greek Orthodox churches dotted around the landscape, usually in prominent positions on top of hills.
Such was the case as we drove down towards Milatos, a seaside village on the north coast of the island which was overlooked by the dramatically located white painted church of St Nektariosat.
Intrigued by the look of the church, we found the little track leading up the hill to the building itself, which looked every bit as good close up as it did from a distance.
The colour combination of white walls, red roof and the blue door matching the blue of the sky was both simple and striking, and Liz and I spent a happy half hour up on the hill, admiring the view and photographing the church from all angles.
