During our two week stay on the Mediterranean island of Crete in September 2017 my wife Liz and I spent most of our time driving around in our hire car, staying away as much as possible from the heavily developed tourist traps of the north coast.
Instead we sought out the beautiful and rugged scenery of undeveloped stretches of coastline and the mountainous interior of the island.
One such trip forund us high in the mountains in central eastern Crete on a great winding road late in the afternoon as the sun was starting to set.
Rounding a bend in the road, we were greeted by this wonderful view of the village of Ano Amigdali, its whitewashed buildings nestled between mountain peaks and just still catching the light of the lowering sun as shadows crept across the landscape.
A quick pitstop allowed me to capture this image, just before the village was overtaken by the enroaching darkness.
Well worth getting off the beaten path to see and photograph such a lovely view.
