The story behind this image

8pm in the evening and up at latitude 53 degrees north there's still just over an hour to go until sunset.

I'm at the stunning Cregennan Lakes to the south of the Snowdonia National Park, Wales, and my grand plan is to climb halfway up the rocky outcrop shown in this image and shoot an overnight time lapse of the Milky Way over Cader Idris, on the opposite shore of the lakes.

But with a little time in hand before I need to establish myself on my lofty perch, I'm enjoying the golden light of evening as the low angled sun splashes patches of light and shadow over the landscape.

So with tripod at the ready and polarising filter fitted to bring out the best of that lovely warm light I spend half an hour or so just taking individual shots of compositions that please me.

This was one of my favourites, with plenty of foreground interest and the peak of my chosen hill nicely framed under an arch of treetops.

A lovely start to a fantastic evening and night's photography under the stars.
