The story behind this image

A rare cloud free dawn on Ireland's Dingle Peninsula found me standing on the shore of Smerwick Bay, fully laden with camera kit and enjoying the early dawn.

A few metres away my wife, various children and grand children are lost in blissful slumber in our holiday cottage. Don't they realise what they're missing? Or is it only mad dogs and photographers who are out and about at this time in the morning?

Anyhow, some scenes just beg to be rendered in a panoramaic format and what's before me is one such scene.

How did I decide that? Well in this case it was the fall off of the light either side of the sun's position, coupled with the shape of the dark patch of rocks in the foreground that gave this panoramic composotion such an attrative appeal. I especially like the oval shaped patch of light in the middle of the image, surrounded by the darker borders.

Back in the days of film I would have had no chance of making this shot. But now with digital capture, a high quality tripod that's set perfectly level, and the astounding stitching capabilities of PhotoShop CS5 those barriers to creativity are removed. Hooray for digital!
