Wandering round Evreux cathedral on a rainy afternoon in Normandy, I came across this little cameo of stone artifacts in an alcove, lit by candles and a smidgeon of window light.
The composition and quality of light were so attractive I just had to try and photograph the scene, but thanks to Ryanair baggage restrictions I was without a tripod to keep the camera steady in the extremely low light conditions.
I did the best I could to prevent camera movement while taking the shot, including cranking up the ISO, under exposing the scene, using lens stabilisation and finally bracing the camera against a convenient railing.
Normally, this combination of shooting parameters is a recipe for disaster, with a noise filled blurry image as the result.
However, I was really pleased with how well this picture came out, with a really atmospheric feel that reflected the solemnity and history surrounding me in the cathedral.
