A cloudy evening at Caernarfon on the North Wales coast was an ideal opportunity for me to try out my latest filter, a six stop neutral density 'little stopper' from Lee Filters.
This provides an effect that can't really be mimicked in Photoshop, as the long exposures allowed by this filter blurs any moving objects while leaving stationary objects sharp.
In this case it was the clouds and sea that were moving, while Caernarfon castle and the city walls remained pin sharp in the final image.
I think this gives a lovely ethereal effect, and provides quite a different feel to the image than if all the elements in the frame were rendered in sharpish detail by using a non-filtered exposure, which would have been two seconds in this case rather than the two minutes that the shutter was actually open for.
It's definitely a technique I'll be using again under the right circumstances.
