There are some great views to be had in town in the middle of the night. This particular neon sign was at the end of the road where we were staying on St Martin during our family holiday in 2008.
The sign was lighting up in stages, so I used a long exposure to capture all the different parts of the sign as it lit up.
When I'm on holiday I try and capture a range of images that go outside of the normal tourist type shots, and aim at expressing some of the character of a place. Also, I find that most places, towns and cities especially, have a very different atmosphere at night, and it's worth going out with the camera outside of 'normal' hours in order to get under the skin of a place.
