Nestled high up on the edge of the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of over 10,000 feet lies Brainard Lake, part of the Brainard Lake Recreation Area.
During our stay in Colorado, my wife Liz and I made a couple of visits to this beautiful wilderness.
The first visit was early on in our stay, and being used to living at sea level we weren't yet acclimatised to the thin air so we didn't make it very far from the car park.
But on the second visit, after a week getting used to breathing less oxygen, we hiked all round the lake with no trouble at all.
This panorama shows the most dramatic view from the lakeside, looking west to the imposing peaks of the Rocky Mountains, speckled with patches of light and shadow from the passing clouds.
We were blessed with unusually nice weather for the time of year (late September), and the lack of any wind rendered the surface of the lake into a reflecting mirror, doubling the pleasure of the view before us.
