And a walk through the autumn woods along the Afon Llugwy at Betws-y-Coed in the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales will show you exactly what he was talking about.
There are some beautiful ancient woodlands here, shown at their best for a couple of weeks in late October as the leaves turn golden before being stipped away in the winter gales.
As my wife Liz and I walked the riverside path my attention was drawn to this solitary oak tree a liite ways back from the water's edge.
Old, huge and shaped like a child's drawing, this magnificent specimen surely fits the description in Joyce Kilmer's poem.
