The story behind this image

The eighteenth deck of a cruise liner certainly gives you a unique viewpoint!

I rarely photograph industrial views, possibly as I spend most of my waking hours working in a factory, but this scene overlooking Belfast harbour in Northern Ireland just captured my imagination.

We had put into Belfast as the first port of call on a cruise up to Iceland and back, and while most of my fellow passengers had disembarked to go on tours of the city Liz and I spent most of our time admiring the views out over Belfast from the highest point on the ship.

One of the things I really appreciate about a being aboard a big cruise ship is the unique views you can see from high up, and the view we had on this occasion was world class, taking in the huge cranes of the Harland & Wolff shipyards (nicknamed 'Samson' and 'Goliath'), the shiny new Titanic museum, the city skyline and finishing with the coal bunkers and cranes of the Milewater Basin.

The whole view just oozed with industrial heritage, now much less busy than it was in its shipbuilding heyday, but still a very evocative view and well worth the effort I put into photographing the stills I used to create this stitched panorama.

I wonder how this view will change over the next generation, and if there'll be anything left of this once mighty centre of industry.

In addition to the still photos I took looking out over Belfast Harbour, I also filmed a time lapse video from the same spot on the ship, looking astern as we sailed out of Belfast and into the Irish Sea, which is well worth a look but following this link.
