How to give a photo a sense of scale.
This is the majestic sweep of beach at Castlegregory on Ireland's Dingle Peninsula. In the background are the Brandon mountains and overhead cirrus and cumulus clouds fight it out as an approaching weather front roils the atmosphere.
Caught in the middle of this huge scenery is the tiny figure of my grandson, clutching his bucket and spade and all alone on the vast expanse of sand.
His placement in this image serves three purposes.
1. I love him, and this is a great holiday photo that brings me joy when I look at it and remember the times we had digging in the sand.
2. Being small in the frame, he highlights the size and majesty of the scenery surrounding him.
3. As he's all alone, he gives the image an ambiance of solitude and vulnerability that without him being there would be missing.
So all in all, I'm glad I included him.
