The beautiful and remote Alwen Reservoir, high on the Denbigh Moors in North Wales, is one of the most verdant places I know.
Take a walk around its seven mile perimeter footpath and you'll move through a range of diverse landscapes, each with its own ecosystem and corresponding flora.
My wife Liz and I often take the potholed track down to the small car park for a hike across the dam and along the footpath on the far side of the lake.
This area is like a giant sponge, with a thick layer of sphagnum moss oozing peaty water when you squeeze a piece.
Growing out of the marsh are bilberry bushes and bog cotton, and a little further back from the path lies mature woodland with its dark, impenetrable gloom.
There's little evidence of mans' involvement in this almost primeval landscape, but there is a rusty old iron fence at the forest edge which caught my eye for this photo.
A poignant contrast between the life and vibrancy of nature set against the slow decay of the fence.
