It was almost midsummer when I took this photo, late one evening at Alwen Reservoir in North Wales after a very pleasant hour or two in the company of my wife Liz as we sauntered along the paths bordering the lake.
At this time of year the sun sets far to the northwest at our latitude of 53 degrees north, which put it at just the right spot in relation to this wooded copse by the side of the lake.
As we paused in our perambulations for me to take this photo I had to quicky decide what to expose for, the bright sky or the dark land, as there was no way I could fit both into the exposure range of my camera's sensor.
It was a no brainer descision really, as the trees in sillhouette would look much better than a completely white sky.
So I dialled in a massive amount of underexposure, turning the sky and water a smoky orange colour in the process while rendering the trees to black.
Although this photo looks nothing like the scene as I saw it with my eyes, I really like the mood of the final image.
