The story behind this image

The first time that Liz and I visited Achill Island on the west coast of Ireland a few years ago it was a thoroughly miserable affair, with high winds, rain and cold all conspiring to make our trip there very short and unfulfilling.

But having subsequently read a glowing account of Achill Island in my '500 Islands You Must Visit Before You Die' book, we decided on a second attempt to try and see the island at its best.

Fortunately for us, we had two full days of sunny weather forecast, so we set off early from our base near Limerick for the three hour drive north to County Mayo, full of hope and expectation.

Wow! We certainly weren't disappointed, with absolutely pristine Atlantic beaches with towering cliffs to admire, we spent all day and on past sunset drinking in the beauty of this amazing place.

One of our stops was at Dugort, to the north of the island, where we enjoyed a couple of hours walking and exploring the golden sandy beach and peaty river that flows into the sea here.

What a difference a rare sunny day makes in this part of the world!
